BP ousts CEO Hayward and taps an American

Robert Dudley is set to replace recently demoted BP CEO Tony Hayward. Hayward stepped down yesterday in the midst of the Gulf oil spill disaster. Robert Dudley will take of the BP daily operations. Dudley is a long time BP employee and has more than 30 years in the oil business. Robert Dudley is a chemical engineer by training and has been in charge of the day to day operations of the Gulf clean up since June. Reports out today state that embattled BP Chief Executive Tony Hayward is set to rack up a $18.03 million dollar (or 11.8 million pounds their money) settlement as he steps down as CEO of BP. Hayward became the face of  BP's flailing efforts to control the Gulf oil spill. It is not clear what Hayward's new role with the company will be.

FORD OFFERS HYBRID CAR FOR SAME PRICE AS GAS POWERED

For the first time Ford will offer a hybrid vehicle at the same price as a gas powered. Hybrids which are normally significantly higher than traditional vehicles run on electricity and also have the option of being fuel powered. The 2011 Lincoln MKZ will be priced around $35,000; which is a few thousand less than their closest competitor. I have always believed that these hybrid cars have not been my cup of tea. The new technology and designs of the cars however, have made me change my opinion. Hybrids no longer appear as alien space ships or toy cars. They have now started to mimic the appearance of their traditional counterparts. The Lincoln MKZ will double the mileage of the gas powered model. Which makes this hybrid vehicle a solid buy for the American consumer. Being priced below the luxury hybrids will keep the Lincoln car within already strained budgets. Fuel costs with hybrid cars can be around fifty percent lower than with gas powered cars. That is typically around 15-30% less fuel per mile. I definitely see the expansion of hybrid cars in the years to come. Making the cars affordable to lower income families will be the industry's next big challenge.

I  recently found myself wondering; in this day and age what exactly is the American dream? When I was a kid in the early 80s growing up in the South; the classic two kids with a dog and a white pickett fence seemed to fit the bill. Today however, that is not the case. Mainstream media and televison shows such as MTV Cribs have painted a much different picture of the American dream. Children now insist on having the best clothes, the best cars, the best cell phones, the best that America has to offer. What happened to just living comfortably and living happily. The added stress that parents feel to meet a lifestyle demand that only a small percent of people can attain can be both mentally stressful and physically demanding. The pressures of living in a recession alone take a big toll on a family budget. The ability to "just make ends meet" is becoming harder and harder for the American family to obtain.
   So why do we see televison shows that tell Americans to buy bigger, live better, put on a good show. Make your neighbors want what you have. Is that really the picture that we want to paint of ourselves. Who are we trying to impress our neighbors or ourselves. What are we trying to prove? Is it better to have it all and worry everyday about losing it? Or having very little with nothing to lose? I believe that the American dream has changed into glitz and glamour. There is no real happiness envolved. So I ask America; what is your American dream?

This is really wild -- Japan's Aircord lab has used the iPad to create a 3D effect, but not what you'd think, with the standard glasses and views. Instead, the iPad is used to project a set of three images onto a specially-coated glass pyramid, which then reflects the three video images in all directions, creating a 3D effect as you move around the display.




You can see the thing in action in the video after the break -- it's not completely perfect (obviously, when you hit a seam while moving around, the image distorts and breaks up), but there is a definite projected hologram feel to it as you look head on. And really, any high resolution display could be used here, but I'm sure the iPad is the cheapest and most handy option for something like this. Very cool idea for sure -- it's tough to think of a real application (maybe a museum installation is the most obvious use), but it is a neat effect.

WHEN THE RUG GETS PULLED

In my blogs I will normally discuss current topics or new consumer products or anything that may be hot or not. In my first blog however; I would like to post something that happened to me this week at work. I work in sales and have been for the last 10 years. I recently went back to work for the company I started with after a brief hiatus. I had gone to work for another company in the same business type but not a direct competitor. After a year my previous and now current employer asked me to come back and told me to name my stipulations. They could not pay me what I currently was making; so I mentioned that as long as raises and promotions would be made available to me in the future I could make due. We arranged that after a year I would be given an automatic raise in pay and that I would also be made well aware of any promotions that became available. Well this week the year was up, the big boss was in town, and it was time for me to cash in. I let him know of everything that was agreed upon between my direct line of authority and myself and exactly what I was promised. The first question he asks me is "Did you get this in writing?" Well no I didn't; I worked for this company for 8 years before I left. I figured that the company's word was good. I know the jokes on me right. I simply stated to this gentleman that if my requests could not be met that maybe I should find another employer. I mean I did ask about these things before accepting the position. He then began to scream at me about threatening the company and if I could not accept what I had been given; maybe I should find another employer. He called me a liar and a fraud all while the person who made the deal with me tried to explain to him that I was telling the truth. They had promised me everything that I had stated. So anywho a life lesson is learned; if you are going to do business these days make sure you get it in writing. So I ask "Getting the rug pulled out from under you at work" Hot or Not????????
